Choosing an exterior paint color is a big decision, but the finish you select is just as important. Paint finish affects how your home looks, how easy it is to maintain, and how well the surface holds up over time.
The most common paint finishes are flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. There is no single finish that is right for every homeowner or surface. Much of the decision comes down to personal preference, the condition of the home, and the level of protection you want.
What Is Paint Finish?
Paint finish refers to how much light a painted surface reflects. A flat finish has very little shine, while eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss finishes become progressively shinier.
The amount of sheen can also affect durability and how noticeable imperfections are. Flatter finishes tend to hide flaws better. Finishes with more sheen are generally easier to clean but may highlight uneven areas.
Flat Finish
Flat paint has little to no noticeable shine. It provides a soft, traditional appearance and can help hide minor imperfections in stucco, siding, walls, and other surfaces.
However, flat paint is usually more difficult to clean and may not provide the same level of protection as a finish with more sheen. Some homeowners still prefer it because of its understated appearance, especially on older homes or surfaces with noticeable texture.
Eggshell Finish
Eggshell paint has a soft, low-level sheen that falls between flat and satin. It reflects a small amount of light, giving surfaces a smooth appearance without looking overly shiny.
For interiors, we typically lean toward eggshell because it offers a good balance between appearance and practicality. It is easier to clean than flat paint while still helping to hide minor imperfections. It works well in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and other common areas.
Satin Finish
Satin has more sheen than eggshell without looking overly glossy. It offers a good balance between appearance, durability, and ease of maintenance.
At Dynamic Painting, we generally recommend and use a satin finish for exterior painting. Our preferred exterior product is PPG Sun-Proof, and we like the satin finish because of the added protection it provides. It is also easier to clean than a flat finish and holds up well on exterior surfaces exposed to weather, dirt, and regular wear.
Satin is a great option for stucco, siding, fascia, gutters, and many other exterior surfaces. The slight sheen can make colors appear richer while still providing a clean, professional appearance.
Semi-Gloss and Gloss Finishes
Semi-gloss and gloss finishes reflect more light and are commonly used on specific exterior details rather than the entire home. They can work well on doors, shutters, trim, railings, and other areas where additional durability or contrast is desired.
Because these finishes are shinier, they are easy to clean. However, they can also make surface imperfections more noticeable. A higher-gloss finish may be a good choice if you want an architectural feature, such as the front door, to stand out.
Does the Surface Affect the Decision?
Yes. The condition and material of the surface should be considered when choosing a finish.
Stucco and older siding may look better with a flat or satin finish because these options are more forgiving. Smooth doors and trim can handle a higher sheen, especially when the goal is to create contrast.
Preparation also plays an important role. Proper cleaning, scraping, sanding, priming, caulking, and repairs help create a better-looking and longer-lasting finish regardless of the sheen selected.
Which Exterior Finish Is Right for Your Home?
For most exterior painting projects, satin provides an excellent balance of protection, appearance, and maintenance. That is why it is our preferred finish. However, every home and homeowner is different.
Before making a final choice, consider:
- How much shine you want
- The condition and texture of the surface
- How easy you want the exterior to be to clean
- The level of durability you need
- Whether you want doors or trim to stand out
